PRIVATE POLICY: Searching For Aphrodite - NYFW SS21

This digital season, New York based PRIVATE POLICY presented another amazing collection.Titled Searching For Aphrodite, the spring-summer collection was inspired by the experience of quarantine and self isolation and how this shared quarantine experience is a sobering yet uniting feeling felt world wide including in cities such as New York and Shanghai.

Designers Siying Qu and Haoran Li say the shutdown forced them to stop everything and spend time with themselves. For their spring-summer 2021 collection the designers decided to investigate and unpack the idea of beauty and self-love.

Siying and Haoran turned to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty for inspiration. Although it is said that Aphrodite’s beauty does not come from her looks but her immense inner power. The designers found portraits of the goddess only focused on her outer appearance and a single standard of beauty that the designers felt undermine the goddess’s true philosophical meaning.

With this collection, Private Policy hopes to challenge the rigid and outdated image of Aphrodite while liberating her powerful spirit by embarking on a search for the modern day Aphrodite that is not defined by one standard of beauty and is inclusive of all body types, genders and identities.

Their amazing Spring-Summer collection features easy and relaxed silhouettes and a subdued color palette. Keeping their signature harnesses the brand refined their design using multi-colored stitching and delicate buttons,  The designers created the harnesses with materials including silk and a symbolic purple sash harness made of recycled CDs.

This season the designers also added drapes to their workwear aesthetics in order to create a comforting and healing sensation. The collections’s color palette ranges from a gentle lilac and  refreshing sage as accent highlights, to classic black from recycled ploy faux leather, and shades of white from biodegradable nylon.  The graphics of the collection contain abstract lines and shapes taken from the famous Botticelli painting of Aphrodite’s birth.

My favorite pieces from this collection include the purple long sleeve shirt and short set and i’m looking forward to purchasing it to wear next season.

Congratulations to Private Policy on another amazing socially conscious  collection
