Way back in 2004 Motorola released the incredibly popular Motorola Razr cellphone. Soon after its release everyone (but me)  whose anyone either had or was planning to get one including all my favorite celebrities at the time. I vividly remember going to the cellphone store and asking the sales clerk if I could hold one, she told me it was the “fashion phone” which made me want it even more. The phone’s sleek design, amazing looking keypad, cool front screen and color options made it  one of the most popular pre smartphone phones to date.

Fast forward to 2019 / 2020 Motorola attempted to relive their heydays of the early 2000s by releasing a smartphone version of their ever popular device. However, the release of the new razar was quickly overshadowed by a Samsung device codenamed “bloom” that later went on to be named the Galaxy Z Flip.

The Galaxy Z Flip is everything that Motorola wanted their 2020 Razr to be. The phone has taken the very best of Samsung’s innovation and compacted it into a small foldable device with a flex glass screen.  Upon its unveiling at the brand’s unpacked event, Samsung’s marketing director Rebecca Hirst said,“ The galaxy Z Flip is a statement smartphone, it’s for trendsetters and trailblazers. It’s like nothing you’ve ever experienced before in a new perfectly compact form factor. This device is an icon, a standout smartphone for people who want to standout and it all starts with a premium design”.

To up its fashion factor the brand partnered with New York luxury label Thom Browne to created a limited edition version of the phone featuring Thom Browne’s signature color stripes on the outer shell of the phone. This version of the device recently made its rounds at Paris Fashion Week with celebrities such as top model Xiao Wen Ju and was recently spotted with BTS leader RM in a selfie he posted with the device on twitter.

Adding a slew of new features to this new piece of tech, I feel that Samsung has marketed this phone towards millennials, cool kids and style setters that have  spending power and want a phone that set them apart from the crowd.  Many tech youtubers have also stated that this phone is for a certain costumer base and not for the everyday user,  a statement in which I strongly agree with. I feel that this device has the potential to be (If it isn’t already) Fashion’s new It phone or the cool phone of this year, a device that everyone will want but not everyone will have.

After its initial release on February 14 it has been reported by numerous tech outlets that the Galaxy Z Flip had sold out (and quickly restocked) in the United States, South Korea and China, some of the largest smartphone markets in the world.

I personally cannot wait to go test out the Galaxy Z Flip and feel the snap nostalgia when closing the phone.  The Z flip is currently available on Samsung’s website and comes in three breathtaking colors, mirror black, mirror purple and mirror gold (in select countries) I’ll definitely  be on the lookout for this device during the next fashion season to see just how fashionable it is.
