Culture Shock
It has been a little over one week since I arrived in The United States of America and one thing I can say is the culture shock is extremely real. I am no longer surrounded by the hustle and bustle that is Jakarta. Being the son of a diplomat I have become accustomed to moving from country to country every 3-4 years of my life however this time everything feels different and nothing is similar to what I’m used to. I have spent a good portion of my life living throughout Asia( Korea, The philipipines, China, Thailand and Indonesia) and althougheach country is culturally different there are still similarities that give me a sense of familiarity wherever I go.
That being said, adjusting to life in America has been easier than expected, minus the luxury of having household help and a driver things to be quite relaxed. I am however missing the social aspect of Indonesia. As i have yet to establish myself here i have yet to be invited to many events or know any of the local designers but i know these things take time.
This feeling of culture shock scares and excites me at the same time. I almost feel like I have been given a new start here in the United States and an opportunity to really impact the fashion scene by introducing America to a bunch of designers they have yet to discover. This challenge is one that I am very much looking forward to. I once heard that life is an adventure and I’m sure my time here in the US (however long that may be) will be an adventure of a lifetime.
